The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
