No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
