New research suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these medications should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
